 I think I understand now where my actual problem lies. The documentation
 and the name for rx_buffer_size suggest that this is related to receiving
 data and not for the send-buffer.

 So I never further looked at ways of setting that. And I disregarded
 fragments due to this as well, since without a way to ensure a specific
 minimum send-buffer size I cannot really determine how big the fragments
 would need to be either.

 I'll try setting the buffer size (and probably using fragments in addition
 to that), thanks for the hints.
